Newspapers and magazines play a great role in the life of a modern person.

We usually read newspapers to get information about the events that have taken or are going to take place in this country or abroad.

One can also read articles about historical events or public figures of the past.

The pages of newspapers carry articles on our economy, industry, agriculture and social life.

Practically all newspapers give weather forecasts, radio and TV programmes.

But there are some specialized news-papers that give only TV programmes.

They also give brief accounts of new films or the films that one can see on TV.

The beginning of the Ukrainian press is considered the “Kharkiv Weekly”, founded in 1812.

In those days newspapers tried to attract readers’ attention to the problems of economic, political and cultural life of this country.

The first literary works in Ukrainian and investigations of Ukrainian folklore appeared on their pages.

Today Ukraine has a large variety of newspapers and magazines.

One can find newspapers of all kinds: national and local, official and private, special newspapers for children, teen-agers, for all kinds of fans — sport fans, music fans, etc.

Business newspapers, women’s magazines, car fans newspapers are very famous.

There are also a lot of “free” newspapers, which specialize in advertising.

The freedom of press has become real today.

Every newspaper has its readers.

I prefer to read “Natali”, “Stolichnye Novosti”.

They are very interesting, I like their style and I read almost all their articles from beginning to end.

Saint Valentine’s Day. День Святого Валентина

Every February, 14, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday?

The history of Valentine’s Day is shrouded in mystery. St. Valentine’s Day contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. There are many legends about Saint Valentine and the origins of the holiday.

Legends of Valentine’s Day

One legend says that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those married, he outlawed marriage for young men.

Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. And Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death, which probably occurred around 270 A.D.

According to another legend, Valentine actually sent the first ‘valentine’ greeting himself. While in prison, Valentine fell in love with a young girl, his jailor’s daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed ‘From your Valentine,’ an expression that is still in use today. Legends usually says that Valentine was a sympathetic, heroic, and romantic person. In the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Valentine’s Day in 17-18 centuries

Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending simple gifts such as flowers.

In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes.

By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology.

Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America.

Interesting facts about Valentine’s Day

• Valentine’s Day is the second largest card-sending holiday of the year (after Christmas).
• Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women.

Modern Valentine’s Day

Nowadays Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many countries of the world on February 14. It is a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).

Modern Valentine’s Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid.

Будь-які речення в англійській мові – розповідні, питальні, наказові – можуть бути як стверджувальними, так і заперечними. Тому потрібно знати, як утворюються заперечення в англійській мові.

Для висловлення заперечення потрібно пам’ятати, що воно утворюється за допомогою двох складових: допоміжного або модального дієслова та частки not. Самими розповсюдженими допоміжними словами є:

• to be
• to have
• to do
• shall
• will

Якщо допоміжних дієслів декілька, то частка not ставиться після першого з них. Також потрібно пам’ятати, що деякі дієслова мають різні формі в однині та множині та у теперішньому і минулому часі. Яке допоміжне дієслово використовувати залежить від того, в якому часі ви хочете сказати речення:

They do not do the work. – Вони не роблять роботу. (Present Simple)

Допоміжні слова та частка not зазвичай зливаються та утворюють одне слово, так звану “скорочену форму”:

do not don’t
does not doesn’t
will not won’t
shall not shan’t
have not haven’t
has not hasn’t
is not isn’t
are not aren’t
am not ain’t
was not wasn’t
were not weren’t
can not/cannot can’t

Приклади:

She doesn’t have the ball. – В неї немає м’ячика.

I can’t run faster. – Я не можу бігти швидше.

Якщо дієслово to be грає роль присудка, то додаткове допоміжне слово не потрібно вживати. Теж саме стосується дієслова to have якщо тільки воно не є модальним в даному випадку або не утворює стійке словосполучення. Але в американському варіанті англійської мови разом з дієсловом have також використовується допоміжне дієслово to do:

I am not here. – Я не тут.

You have no idea about that! (британський варіант) або You don’t have any ideas about that! (американський варіант) – Ви поняття про це не маєте!

Також запам’ятайте, що частка not може відноситися до не особистої форми дієслова:

Not making enough money, he decided to go abroad. – Не заробляючи багато грошей він все ж таки вирішив поїхати за кордон.

Але найголовніше, що ви маєте знати це те, що в англійській мові не може бути відразу два-три заперечення в реченні. На відміну від української мови, де можна сказати відразу два або більше заперечень. Наприклад:

Ти ніколи не зможеш грати у футбол.

В даному реченні використано 2 заперечення – прислівник та частка. В англійській мові в реченні може бути лише одне заперечення, яке можна висловити як часткою not, так і іншими словами:

• заперечними займенниками no, nodody, nothing, nowhere, none
• сполучниками neither, nor
• прислівниками міри та ступеня hardly, scarcely, never
• прийменником without

На прикладі вищезазначеного речення:

You can never play football.

You cannot play football ever.

Сполучники neither та nor можна вживати в одному реченні для перерахування речей, що не є можливими:

You cannot play neither football nor volleyball. – Ти не зможеш грати ні у футбол, ні у волейбол.

nAlexander Graham Bell (3 March 1847 – 2 August 1922) was an eminent scientist, inventor and innovator who is widely credited with the invention of the telephone.

nHis father, grandfather and brother had all been associated with work on elocution and speech, and both his mother and wife were deaf, profoundly influencing Bell's life's work. His research on hearing and speech further led him to experiment with hearing devices that eventually culminated in Bell being awarded the first U.S. patent for the invention of the telephone in 1876.

nMany other inventions marked Bell's later life including groundbreaking work in hydrofoils and aeronautics. In 1888, Alexander Graham Bell became one of the founding members of the National Geographic Society.

People have always polluted their surroundings. But until now pollution was not such a serious problem. In past most people lived in uncrowded rural areas and didn’t have pollution-causing machines. But with the development of crowded industrial cities the problem of pollution has become more important. Using automobiles and other machines made pollution steadily worse. Since the 1950’s people have become alarmed with the danger of environmental pollution.

Air, water, and soil are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. On polluted soil, food products can’t be grown. In addition environmental pollution spoils the natural beauty of our planet.

Pollution is a very complicated and a serious problem. Automobiles are polluting the air but they provide fast transportation for the people. Plants and factories pollute the air and the water but they provide jobs for people and produce necessary goods. Fertilizers and pesticides are important for growing crops but they pollute soil.

Thus, people would have to stop using many useful things if they wanted to end pollution immediately. Most people don’t agree to do that. But pollution can be reduced gradually. Scientists and engineers can find the ways to reduce pollution from automobiles and factories. Government can pass the laws that would make enterprises take measures for reducing of pollution. Individuals and groups of people can work together to persuade enterprises to stop polluting environment.
