Holidays in Ukraine

Almost every country has holidays honouring important events in its history.

Some holidays come on the same date, some are movable.

New Year's Day is very popular all over the world. It is my favourite holiday.

We celebrate the first day of Christmas on the 7th of January. On the 6th of January people cook much food because the day after we must not work. On this day we have a sacred supper or Kolyada. It begins when the first star lights up. As the legend says, this star announced the birth of the God's Son. We celebrate Christmas for three days. In the evening a group of boys comes. They sing songs. By these songs they congratulate on holiday.

Another religious holiday is Easter. It is movable. In Ukraine we have special attributes of Easter: Easter eggs, we call them "krashanka" and Easter cakes "paska". It is a very nice spring holiday.

Victory Day is on the 9th of May. It is a sacred holiday for every Ukrainian citizen. We are thankful to our grandfathers for the victory.

Political System of the Great Britain

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a constitutional monarchy. Britain does not have a written constitution. Parliament is the most important authority in Britain.

The monarch serves formally as head of state. The present sovereign is Queen Elizabeth II (the second).

The House of Commons consists of Members of Parliament. General elections are held every five years. All citizens aged 18 have the right to vote.

There are few political parties in Britain. The main ones are: the Conservative Party, the Labour Party.

Each political party puts up one candidate for each constituency. The one who wins the most votes is elected MP for that area.

The party which wins the most seats in Parliament forms the Government; its leader becomes the Prime Minister.

The functions of the House of Commons are legislation and scrutiny of government activities. The House of Commons is presided over by the Speaker.

The House of Lords is presided by the Lord Chancellor. The House of Lords has no real power.

It's in the House of Commons that new bills are introduced and debated.

Parliament is responsible for British national policy. Local governments are responsible for organizing such services as education, police and many others.

Об'єднане Королівство Великобританії і Північної Ірландії є конституційною монархією. Британія не має написаної конституції. Парламент – найважливіший орган у Британії.

Монарх формально є главою держави. Теперішній монарх – Єлизавета II (друга).

Палата Общин складається з членів Парламенту. Загальні вибори проходять кожні 5 років. Усі громадяни, що досягли 18 років мають виборче право.

У Британії існує мало політичних партій. Головні – це консервативна партія і лейбористська партія.

Кожна політична партія висуває одного кандидата від кожного виборчого округу. Той, хто набере більшість голосів, стає обраним членом Парламенту від того округу.

Партія, яка одержує більшість в Парламенті, формує уряд; її лідер стає прем'єр-міністром.

Функції Палати Общин – законотворення і уважний огляд діяльності уряду. Палата Общин очолюється Спікером.

Голова Палати Лордів – Лорд Канцлер. У палати Лордів немає фактичної влади.

Саме в Палаті Общин представляються і розглядаються нові законопроекти.

Парламент відповідальний за британську національну політику. Місцеві уряди відповідають за організацію таких послуг, як освіта, поліція і багато інших.

In Great Britain it is never too hot or too cold for work or play in the open air. This is because of the sea, which keeps the island warm in winter and makes the air cool in summer.

The winds have also very much to do with weather in Great Britain. The winds blow from the south-west two days out of every three. But warm winds that blow from the Atlantic are as wet as they are warm. They also bring plenty of rain to the island. The east and north-east winds are cold and dry.

Thanks to the mild climate there are a lot of evergreen plants in Great Britain. And the country is always green. But the lack of sunshine is the reason why the cultivation of grain crops is difficult. Grass grows all the year round.

It provides fodder for cattle.

The weather changes very often. You can never have the same kind of weather for a long time. In spring sunshine and showers follow each other so often during the day that an umbrella or a raincoat are things you want most in Great Britain.

In spring the weather is generally mild but sometimes they get really cold days. The summer is not so hot as on the continent, and warm days in autumn are beautiful.

In winter they have all sorts of weather. Sometimes it rains and sometimes it snows, and they also have fog and frost. Still, in Great Britain it is never so cold in winter as on the continent, and they don't get much snow there. The rivers and lakes are seldom covered with ice. As the ice, if there is any, is not thick enough they seldom go skating on the rivers in Great Britain.

But the worst thing about the climate in Great Britain is the thick fog they so often have in autumn or winter. In London it is sometimes so thick that cars may run into one another.

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places, or just for a change of scene. It's always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical rhythms.
Those who live in the country like to go to a big city and spend their time visiting museums and art galleries, looking at shop windows and dining at exotic restaurants. City-dwellers usually like a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains, with nothing to do but walk and bathe and laze in the sun.
Most travellers and holiday-makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them — the sights of a city, old churches and castles, views of mountains, lakes,  forests;  People travel by train, by plane, by boat and by car.
