Meet my family. There are five of us – my parents, my elder brother, my baby sister and me. First, meet my mum and dad, Jane and Michael. My mum enjoys reading and my dad enjoys playing chess with my brother Ken. My mum slim and is rather tall. She has long red hair and big brown eyes. She has a very pleasant smile and a soft voice. My mother is very kind and understanding. We are real friends. She is a housewife. As she has three children, she is always busy around the house. She takes care of my baby sister Meg, who is only three months old. My sister is very small and funny. She sleeps, eats and sometimes cries. We all help our mother and let her have a rest in the evening. Then she usually reads a book or just watches TV. My father is a doctor. He is tall and handsome. He has short dark hair and gray eyes. He is a very hardworking man. He is rather strict with us, but always fair. My elder brother Ken is thirteen, and he is very clever. He is good at Maths and always helps me with it, because I can hardly understand all these sums and problems. Ken has red hair and brown eyes. My name is Jessica. I am eleven. I have long dark hair and brown eyes. I am not as clever as my brother, though I try to do my best at school too.

-So, passing by the store, you will see a two-storey  grey building. This is the house you need. If I'm not mistaken, the entrance is directly opposite the store.

- Thanks a lot! Now I will surely find the address I need!

-Not at all. Can I help you with anything else?

- Yeah, if you can, just tell me where the nearest pharmacy is.

-Are you unwell? Shall I call an ambulance?

- No, thank you, you are so kind. I was a little cold yesterday and today I feel sick. I want to buy some pills for the cold.

-Of course, there's a very good pharmacy not far from here. You will find there everything you need. Just turn left the corner and go for one block. The pharmacy can’t be missed. It’s a small colorful building with a beautiful sign on it.

Every day in elementary school in America begins at 9.20 a.m. Children have classes till 3.15 p.m. At 12 o’clock children have lunch. Many boys and girls bring their lunch from home. But some of them go for lunch to a school cafeteria.

Mrs. Bradley prepares school lunches almost every weekday for her two children. Sometimes she gives the children money and they eat in the school cafeteria. But usually the children prefer to take a lunch from home.

This morning Mrs. Bradley is making peanut butter and cheese sandwiches, the children’s favorite. She puts two bottles of apple juice for the children to drink. She is going to put the sandwiches, some cherry tomatoes and two bananas in their lunchboxes. The lunchbox is easy for the children to carry to school.

There are different kinds of animals on our planet, and all of them are very important for it. For example, everybody knows that the sharks are dangerous for people, but they are useful for cleaning seawater. There are two types of animals: domestic (or pets) and wild. People keep pets in their homes. And some wild animals are very dangerous. Domestic animals live next to people, whereas wild animals’ “homes” are forests, jungles, oceans and so on.

Giraffes are very beautiful and unusual animals. They are the tallest land animals in the world. Giraffes can reach a height of 5,5 m and a weight of 900 kg. They are famous for their long necks. But does anybody know that giraffes have a very long tongue? They can even clean the ears with it! Giraffes are usually yellow or light brown with dark stains. Giraffes live in African savannas. They can live from 20 до 30 years. It is interesting to know that giraffes sleep only for a few minutes at a time. They sit down on the ground and bend their long neck down.

Giraffes do not hunt. They eat leaves, grass, and fruit. Due to their long neck, they can reach the highest leaves on the trees that other animals cannot eat.

You can often meet giraffes in city Zoos. They are very friendly and all the children like them very much.

My dream  

As most of my schoolmates I am fond of computer very much. It helps us to study and to entertain. Two months ago my father presented me a new notebook for my birthday. Before this I used to spend most free time playing computer games. I did well! But now it’s not enouth for me and I want to create my own game! That is my dream.

Some people think that computer games only do harm. But I want to desagree. Some of them are not only interesting but they also develop our thinking and logic. These games are strategies. They teach us to use our knowledge in different spheeres of life and may help us in real life.

My dream is to create such a game that would be like a race but the goal is to keep the rule of the road while completing different missions. This game may be very useful. You are learning the rule while playing. You are getting used to keep it on the roads of the city and become a careful driver.

It takes a lot to learn any programming language to such a level that you can write a video game. As for me, I dream that it will become my occupation in future. I will create a beautiful, interesting and useful game!

My favorite picture

I am not very fond of arts but there are some masterpieces that I admire and that I would like to see with my own eyes. One of them is Van Gogh’s “Starry night over the Rhone”. It was painted in September 1888 in France. Now it’s located in Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

This oil painting is a landscape presenting a view of Rhone’s bank in Arles at night. The spectator seems to look towards the opposite shore. He sees the lights in the houses there and their traces on the water. There on the back ground fuzzy contours of buildings and trees are slightly visible through the dark. The sky is filled with big bright stars reflecting in the deep blue water. On this shore there are some boats and two people – a man and a woman - walking on the sand.

It’s difficult to define what the foreground of the painting is because there are lots of details and the whole composition which make your eyes examine every piece of the canvas. As for me, it’s the water surface with the reflections on it and the starry sky above. The sky and the river in the middle of the picture are much lighter. It attracts our attention there.

The principle devices used by Van Gogh here is coloring (he uses two optional colors – blue and yellow in great variety of tones and hues) and light and shade effects. The technique used by the artist is called impasto – the paint is laid on an area of the surface very thickly and roughly. It’s the manner of Van Gogh which makes his works very expressing and lively. Looking at “Starry night over the Rhone” I seem to feel a cool breeze, to smell the river, to hear the waves’ murmur and to be a little blinded by the bright starlight.

Ukraine has a long history and rich culture. That is why there are many places of interest there. It is natural that the capital of the country, Kyiv, has the greatest number of them. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe. From time immemorial Kyiv has been the centre of Slavonic culture. There are many ancient cathedrals and churches, museums and monuments, beautiful streets and squares in it.  

   The main street of Kyiv is certainly Khreshchatyk. If you have never been to Kyiv you should start your sightseeing there. The street is only one kilometre long but very impressive. Kyiv is famous for its Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra. More than 80 buildings were constructed on its territory during 900 years of the monastery's existence. Tourists always go to have a look at the monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the outstanding Ukrainian statesman and military leader.  

   There are many other places of interest in Kyiv. One of them is the State Historical Museum of Ukraine. There are more than 50,000 exhibits on display. The exposition tells us about the history of Ukraine and its culture from antiquity to the present days. The Golden Gates, the Andreyevskaya Church, the monuments to Prince Volodymyr and Taras Shevchenko are worth seeing. Shevchenko Kyiv Opera and Ballet House, Kyiv Ivan Franko Drama Theatre are well-known all over the country. Any place is interesting in its own way and visiting it we come to know and love this country more.

Тhe mass media play an important role in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment. They also influence the way we see the world and shape our views.

Of course, not all newspapers and TV programs report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV reporters try to be fair and provide us with reliable information.

It is true that the world today is full of dramatic events and most news seems to be bad news. But people aren't interested in ordinary events. That is why there are so many programs and articles about natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies. The good news doesn't usually make headlines. Bad news does.

Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on people's private lives. They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is — should this be allowed?

The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that's an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it's much more difficult for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the pages of newspapers.

Still, many people prefer the radio. It's good to listen to it in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.

Newspapers don't react to events as quickly as TV, but they usually provide us with extra details, comments and background information.

The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don't have to wait for news time on TV.

One can distinguish two branches of human work: the arts and the sciences. The sciences require knowledge, observation, identification, description, experimentation and theoretical explanation.

The arts on the contrary require skill. That means the ability to work well with a part of his or her body. It is the combination of talent and technique. An artist is a man who can do something well with his own hands and tools. Some time ago everything that was made with tools was "artificial", not natural. The word "manufacture", for example, once meant "to make by hand"

Everything is a bit different nowadays. The word "art" has a special meaning. It means something beautiful. The paintings of skilled painters are appreciated and admired by millions of people today, by those who can see the beauty. Art comprises weaving rugs, tapestries, ceramic work. So there are a lot of types of art. Nevertheless one can trace basic principles in art. All kinds of it require the same characteristics. The separate parts of a work of art should be arranged in pattern. The form itself, a pleasing shape and balance are extremely important.

Art inspires the human spirit. Painters, sculptors, musicians, writers, weavers - they all contribute to a better life for us.

 Movies play an important role in my life and of course I like to go to the cinema. As for me it is an available popular form of art, I find visiting cinemas is one of the best ways of spending my free time. And everyone can choose his favorite genre of film. There are such genres of feature films like a thriller, a musical, a drama and a comedy. To my mind movies extend our knowledge about people, about the world we live. Everyone knows that we live in a very difficult time nowadays. But sometimes we do need something amusing, pleasant and funny. That’s why I prefer comedies. And there is no doubt that a good film gives us an excellent entertainment.

Watching a good film with children helps us in upbringing. I think taste can be formed through the movies because there are a lot of films about nature, animals, and kind people. And I like serious films where serious problems of our life are raised up.

Children mesmerized for hours before a television set watching cartoons seeing for the fifth time because it is interesting. And I enjoy seeing cartoons too.

Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine. It's one of the oldest cities of Europe. Last year we celebrated the fifteen hundred twenty fourth anniversary of its foundation. There are many places of historic interest in it. Among them there are the Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra, the Golden Gate, the St. Sophias Cathedral and others.

Kyiv is situated on the picturesque banks of the Dnieper river. It is one of the most beautiful cities of Europe. One half of Kyiv's territory is occupied by parks and gardens. The population of Kyiv is about 3 millions.

Kyiv is a large political, industrial and cultural centre. Kyiv is a seat of the higher body of state power of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada.

Kyiv is a scientific centre. The Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and many research institutes are here. Kyiv's cultural life is rich and varied. There are many theatres, museums, exhibitions in Kyiv.

The national art of Ukraine (paintings, sculpture and drawings) is shown in the Museum of Ukrainian Art.

Kyiv's theatres are well-known not only in our country. The famous National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Ivan Franko Ukrainian Drama Theatre, the Lesya Ukrainka Russian Drama Theatre and other theatres are greatly appreciated by the Kyivites and the guests of the city.

The most important educational institutions of Ukraine are in Kyiv. The National Ukrainian University named after Shevchenko is in the centre of the capital. Just opposite the famous red building of the University there is a fine park well-known to the Kyivites. In the centre of the park there is a nice monument to the great Ukrainian poet, whose name the University bears.

Kyiv is especially beautiful in spring when the famous Kyiv chestnut trees are in blossom.

Kyiv, this ancient and ever young city, is the pride and glory of the Ukrainian people.

There is no real national press in the USA as there are more than 85 newspapers published in 34 languages. There exist two main groups of newspapers: qualities and populars. Only 2 or 3 newspapers with the largest circulation tell their readers about some rumours or crimes.

Quality newspapers contain only reliable serious information. They may also publish cartoons. “The Wall Street Journal”, “The New York Daily News”, “The USA Today”, “The New York Times” have the largest circulation among the daily newspapers. The main function of press in America is to give objective information. The materials should be given in full volume and newspapers should give floor to all possible facts and opinions. There is also no secret information for the press.

The information is usually taken from the News Agencies. The largest and most famous of them are: Associated Press (AP) and United Press International (UPI). There also exist about 122 domestic and foreign news bureaus in the USA.

There are over 4000 monthly and 1300 weekly magazines in the USA. Among them are: “National Geographic”, “Reader’s Digest”, “Cosmopolitan”, “Time”, “Vogue” and others. Women’s magazines publish all sorts of recipes, stories about local or outstanding women, furnishing questions and other items.

Publishing books in America is rather a prosperous business. America is on the 9th place in the world by the books, published and read. Public libraries always organize book sales. Most newspapers and magazines publish chapters from the books of young authors.

Newspapers and magazines play a great role in the life of a modern person.

We usually read newspapers to get information about the events that have taken or are going to take place in this country or abroad.

One can also read articles about historical events or public figures of the past.

The pages of newspapers carry articles on our economy, industry, agriculture and social life.

Practically all newspapers give weather forecasts, radio and TV programmes.

But there are some specialized news-papers that give only TV programmes.

They also give brief accounts of new films or the films that one can see on TV.

The beginning of the Ukrainian press is considered the “Kharkiv Weekly”, founded in 1812.

In those days newspapers tried to attract readers’ attention to the problems of economic, political and cultural life of this country.

The first literary works in Ukrainian and investigations of Ukrainian folklore appeared on their pages.

Today Ukraine has a large variety of newspapers and magazines.

One can find newspapers of all kinds: national and local, official and private, special newspapers for children, teen-agers, for all kinds of fans — sport fans, music fans, etc.

Business newspapers, women’s magazines, car fans newspapers are very famous.

There are also a lot of “free” newspapers, which specialize in advertising.

The freedom of press has become real today.

Every newspaper has its readers.

I prefer to read “Natali”, “Stolichnye Novosti”.

They are very interesting, I like their style and I read almost all their articles from beginning to end.
