Round the calendar.

     The 1^st of January, New Year’s Day, is a big holiday in Scotland. People don’t go to work on that day, and children don’t go to school. Scottish people celebrate New Year’s Eve in every family. Friends usually come on that day. They have a good dinner. After dinner there are apples, other fruit, and different sweets to eat. Then all the family and the friends begin to play games and dance.

    Before 12 o’clock at night many people in the towns go out into the streets and the friends begin to play games and dance.

    Then people wish a Happy New Year to all and go home to meet the first-footers. A first-footer is a man who comes first to a house on the 1^st of January, on New Year’s Day. Today the first-footer brings a little piece of coal, some money and a little piece of bread. These things show that the family will be warm and they will have food and money all the year.

    When the first-footer comes into the house, he wishes a Happy New Year to all the members of the family, talks to them, eats and drinks something and goes to another house.

 Many people like to travel a lot. Some of them have even made a trip all over the world. Traveling let’s people get to know a lot of knew and exciting things, meet new friends. They say that sometimes you should plan your journey beforehand. You can have a look at the leaflets in the tourist agencies. They give us information about size, climate, population, national languages and sights of this country.

    The United Kingdom is a popular place for traveling. Tourists often order the sightseeing tour around London. It covers a lot of interesting places. London is an old city. It has got a lot of places of interest. A red double-decker will take you to Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace or the Tower of London. London is famous for its beautiful parks. Hyde Park is the most democratic park in the world. Anyone can say anything he likes there.

    London is a city of immigrants. People of different nationalities live there. You should meet the people and learn about their culture. Don’t forget to take some photos.

     In the school holidays Jim and Joe visit Super Park with their dad. There are lots of interesting things in Super Park. There is a big roller coaster. It is very high and fast. Joe likes the roller coaster, but Jim doesn’t like it. The roller coaster is opposite the snack bar.    There are swings in Super Park. The swings are next to the restaurant. Jim likes to go on the swings. There is a big swimming pool. Jim, Joe and their dad love swimming. The swimming pool is behind the zoo. The boys like the zoo. There are hippos, tigers and monkeys. There are also elephants. Jim and Joe like the elephants best. They like stroking the elephants’ trunks.

      Then it is nearly time to go home. Dad and the boys go to the restaurant. Dad has a cup of tea. Joe has an ice cream and Jim has a fruit salad.

Football is the world’s most popular sport. It is a team sport. A football team has got eleven players. A team wins by scoring goals. The players must kick the ball. They try to kick the ball into the other team’s goal. Only the goal keeper can pick up the ball. The other ten players mustn’t pick up the ball. The most famous football competition is the World Cup.

       Tennis is another very popular sport. The players stand in an area called a court. They stand behind a net. They hit a tennis ball to each other with a racket. The ball must go over the net. It mustn’t hit the net and it mustn’t go out of the court. In some games there are only two players. This is called singles. In other games two players play two other players. This is called doubles. The most famous tennis competition is Wimbledon. Wimbledon is in London.

The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv. It is a big city. More than three million people live there. Kyiv is situated on the Dnipro, the main Ukrainian river. When you go on the bridges over Dnipro you can admire the beauty of this river. Khreshchatyk is the main street in Kyiv. People like to walk in Khreshchatyk. On Saturday and Sunday there is no traffic in this street.  Maidan Nezalezhnosti  is the main square in Kyiv. This place is very beautiful.

   In spring and summer the streets in Kyiv are very nice because there are a lot of green trees there especially in May when the chestnut trees are in blossom.

   There are also many places of interest in Kyiv. They are the Golden Gate, St. Sophia Cathedral, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and many others.

It’s Sunday. Wendy’s father is going to take the children in his boat. He has got a map. He says, “First we are going to go along the river, under the bridges and past the fish market. Then we are going to go round the castle. You can take photos. Next we are going to go onto the beach and have a picnic.”

They all go into the boat but suddenly it starts raining. Oh, no! What a pity!
